THE RULE OF 10,000 HOURS OF PRACTISE

The Elites says that it takes roughly ten thousand hours of practice to achieve mastery in a field. How do they arrive at this conclusion? And, if the conclusion is true, how can we leverage this idea to achieve greatness in our professions?

Gladwell, an author studied the lives of extremely successful people to find out how they achieved success. This article will review a few examples from Gladwell’s research, and conclude with some thoughts for moving forward.

Violins in Berlin

In the early 1990s, a team of psychologists in Berlin, Germany studied violin students. Specifically, they studied their practice habits in childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. All of the subjects were asked this question: “Over the course of your entire career, ever since you first picked up the violin, how many hours have you practiced?”

All of the violinists had begun playing at roughly five years of age with similar practice times. However, at age eight, practice times began to diverge. By age twenty, the elite performers averaged more than 10,000 hours of practice each, while the less able performers had only 4,000 hours of practice.

The elite had more than double the practice hours of the less capable performers.

Natural Talent ; not important
One fascinating point of the study: No “naturally gifted” performers emerged. If natural talent had played a role, we would expect some of the “naturals” to float to the top of the elite level with fewer practice hours than everyone else. But the data showed otherwise. The psychologists found a direct statistical relationship between hours of practice and achievement. No shortcuts. No naturals.

Sneaking out to write codes

You already know how Microsoft was founded. Bill Gates and Paul Allen dropped out of college to form the company in 1975. It’s that simple: Drop out of college, start a company, and become a billionaire, right? Wrong.

Further study reveals that Gates and Allen had thousands of hours of programming practice prior to founding Microsoft. First, the two co-founders met at Lakeside, an elite private school in the Seattle area. The school raised three thousand dollars to purchase a computer terminal for the school’s computer club in 1968.

A computer terminal at a university was rare in 1968. Gates had access to a terminal in eighth grade. Gates and Allen quickly became addicted to programming.

With these two stories we read, what can we do to be the master in what we do and love to do. Check my next post to continue

3 ways to be successful

1. Don't Dislike Success. Some people literarily dislike success. How? When your friend, colleague, neighbour etc is progressing, your wish is for them to fall. Success is contagion. If you are happy with others' success, yours will draw closer to you. Never say someone is too small for his achievements. Pray God answer your prayers too.
 2. You need people. There is a Yoruba adage that says..."acheiving success becomes faster when you are lifted by people around you". You need the right people around you who would give positive input into you life and help hasten your sojourn to success. Move with around positive people.
3. POSITIONING I will draw explanation of this from the write up of one of my colleague; . "becoming suc'cessful at the right time and with the right person depending on how well you position yourself for them to affect your life. even in football no matter how good a striker is, if he lack positioning he will hardly score a goal". ==== ARE YOU READY TO POSITION YOURSELF FOR THAT SU'CCESS?

Ways To Survive The Harmatta

Harmattan affects our health in many ways: our skin, eyes and respiratory tract most vulnerable to the effects of this weather.
The skin suffers dryness with accompanying cracking of lips, soles of the feet and sometimes the skin itself. The eyes also suffer from the abundance of dust particles carried along by the winds, thus itching, foreign body sensations and redness may be common especially in those with allergic eye diseases.
A lot of diseases are easily triggered due to this change in weather and lots of care must be taken to avoid fatal consequences.
Here are a few tips on how to make it through this dry patch;

1. Drink lots of water to prevent dehydration.

2. Avoid antiseptic soaps during this weather. Use them only when you have a skin infection it is meant to treat.Use it even then for a short period and stop.

3. Keep the skin healthy by applying oily creams and wearing weather friendly clothing.

4. Use lip balms and apply Vaseline to the soles of the feet to prevent them from cracking.

5. Wear warm clothes; they will protect you from the severe cold.

6. Wear protective spectacles for your eyes in a dusty area.

7. Asthma patients or those with chronic respiratory conditions should pay special attention to their health and take all possible and practicable measures to reduce exposure to the dusty atmosphere and they should carry their inhalers with them at all times.

8. Due to the dusty atmosphere we should practice a healthy food preservation culture. Fruits and vegetables should be properly washed before eating and those of us that store our drinking water should always ensure that the containers are always adequately covered.

9. We can also keep our homes warm but please be careful as this is also the season when we have the most fire accidents. All fires should not be left unattended and we should avoid indiscriminate burning of refuse during this season.

POPE FRANCIS BEGINS ASIA TRIP IN SRI LANKA

Pope Francis has begun a week-long trip to Asia, leaving Rome for Sri Lanka and the Philippines.
The pope returns to Asia for the second time of his papacy, part of the Church's outreach to developing nations.
Pope Francis arrives Tuesday in Sri Lanka where he brings a message of interfaith harmony to a country still recovering from civil war. He will be greeted by Sri Lanka's new President Maithripala Sirisena, who won a surprise election victory last week in part by promising increased respect for religious minorities.
Sri Lanka is predominately Buddhist, but the Catholic Church sees itself as a unifying force in the community because it includes people from both the majority Sinhalese and minority Tamil ethnic groups. The Sinhalese are predominately Buddhist while the Tamils are mostly Hindu.
While in Sri Lanka, Pope Francis will canonize Sri Lanka's first saint, Joseph Vaz. Vaz is a 17th century missionary credited with reviving the Catholic faith during a time of persecution by Dutch Calvinists.

On Thursday, the pope will travel to the Philippines, Asia's only majority Roman Catholic nation. Millions of people are expected to attend an outdoor Mass given by Pope Francis.

The trip to the Philippines comes 20 years after the last papal visit to the country, by John Paul II.

Millions of Filipinos are expected to attend his events, possibly surpassing the record 5 million who turned out for the last papal visit, by St. John Paul II in 1995.

While in the Philippines, Pope Francis will also meet with victims of the devastating 2013 Typhoon Haiyan.

The Vatican says the pope will speak throughout his Asia trip on themes of the environment, poverty and family.

A WOMAN SEEN FLEEING THE JEWISH SUPERMARKET

A woman seen fleeing the Jewish supermarket at the end of Friday's bloody siege with her baby in her arms was last night recovering in hospital from her ordeal. Sarah Bitton hid with her 11-month-old baby in the cold storage room of Hyper Cacher when gunman Amedy Coulibaly burst into the shop, killing four people. After being rescued by police, she told medical workers she feared her child might have suffered from hypothermia following their ordeal. But the child was reported to be "safe and healthy", with rosy cheeks and a normal temperature of 37C. Miss Bitton, the daughter of a kosher butcher's shop owner in Uccle, Belgium, was pictured escaping alongside armed officers out of Hyper Cacher, clutching the baby, in a series of dramatic photographs. She was given immediate first aid treatment by paramedics at the scene before the pair were rushed to an unnamed Paris hospital. A source said: "The mother is happy and relieved. The baby did not suffer from hypothermia following his period in the cold store. Both mother and baby are doing well." It is expected that Miss Bitton will be reunited with her family today.

THE HOSTAGE OF THE KOUACHI BROTHERS TELLS HIS STORY OF WHAT HAPPENED DURING THE SIEGE

THE HOSTAGE OF THE KOUACHI BROTHERS TELLS HIS STORY OF WHAT HAPPENED DURING THE SIEGE
"I saw a Kalashnikov and a rocket launcher and, then, I understood" Michel Catalano, the owner of the Dammartin print works, who was held hostage by the Kouachi brothers says he was more concerned about his employee Lilian Lapere, who remained hidden throughout the ordeal. He said the terrorists asked him three times if he was alone and he replied he was each time. Lilian, 26, was hidden in a box throughout. Showing remarkable composure, he also said: "I have got to get on with life. I have a business to run.". Michel was only held hostage for an hour before they let him go but Lilian remained hidden upstairs throughout.. "I saw them coming. I saw a Kalashnikov and a rocket launcher. I felt as if I was in a film. I turned round and told him (Liliane) to hide. I knew it was too late for me to hide. I walked calmly towards them. They were never aggressive," said Mr Catalano.

‘The killing of 17 victims in 3 despicable terrorist acts this week prompted a unity march of 1.5 million people including 40 world leaders in Paris. Well done. Maybe it's just me but did anyone else hear about Nigeria? 2000 civilians including women and children were massacred by terrorists this week. Can somebody tell me why nobody is marching for those victims? Any world leaders planning a trip to Lagos or Abuja this week? Too busy? Bad flight connections? Just asking.  REUTERS - The youngest of three French nationals being sought by police for a suspected Islamist militant attack that killed 12 people at a satirical magazine on Wednesday turned himself into police, an official at the Paris prosecutor's office said.
Several people linked to two other suspected attackers were also in custody, the news agency AFP reported. Police issued a document to forces across the region saying the men were being sought for murder in relation to the Charlie Hebdo attack.

The document, reviewed by a Reuters correspondent, named them as Said Kouachi, born in 1980, Cherif Kouachi, born in 1982, both from Paris, and Hamyd Mourad, born in 1996.
A police source said one of them had been identified by his identity card, which had been left in the getaway car. An official at the Paris prosecutor's office said the youngest of the three had turned himself in at a police station in Charleville-M×™ziטres, some 230 kilometres northeast of Paris near the Belgium border.
Unidentified sources, said the man had decided to go to the police after seeing his name in social media.

HOW TO BUILD YOUR CONFIDENCE WHILE SINGING ON STAGE

     Singing on stage is not all about climbing the stage and carrying the microphone to sing or shout as many artiste do. No!, it takes a lot. Singing on stage involves singing with best voice tone and pitch and having the ability to carry your audience along with you. If you can know yur audience's mind, you know what they want and sing/flow with them, you are a big time musician and entertainer. The steps to take while singing with confidence on stage are ;
 1.           PROPER REHEARSALS ; you have to efficiently rehearse before you perform on stage. In football, they say, 'a coach is as good as his last game'. So if your rehearsal ended up poor or bad, the chance of flopping your performances is very high. Learn the lyrics repeatedly. Always remember them. And then you must rest at least 24 hrs before your performance. Do not over stress yourself.
2.            PLAYINGIN A SMALL AUDIENCE; You can sing in the midst of your friends and you asked them how well you did so that you will know how to correct some of your mistakes. You can also record on your phone whether audio or video. You can as well sing in front of your mirror to see your demonstration.
3.            SINGINGWITH A BAND:  This is one of the best way to improve yourself as a musician. Do not associate yourself with average band members that you feel you are the boss rather you associate yourself with the best so you look like a rookie when you just come in. If you are determined and hardworking and you always listen to corrections, in no time you will improve. Singing in studio will also help. You know studio sessions are expensive, so you have to prepare very well for it.
4.            OVERCOMINGSTAGE FRIGTH:  Turn off your mind when you get on stage. Don’t waste time overthinking and asking yourself negative questions.  Just start enjoying your performance and inhabiting the moment. If you cant think straight at the audience, you create one that loves what you do, that will applaud you while singing and you put him between two people. They will think you are staring at them.
Then finODally I saved the best for the last. After you have practiced all this steps, just TRUST GOD.

I wanna know how this article has helped you. A comment or question will be appreciated
